The Department of Management was established in 1970, coinciding with the emergence of the Department of Commerce as an independent Faculty at the University of Dhaka. However, the roots of commerce education at the university trace back even further — to the academic session of 1922–23, just after the university’s founding. This long-standing legacy highlights the department’s pivotal role in the evolution of business education in Bangladesh.
The vision of the Department of Management is to stand out as the premier center for management education not only in Bangladesh but also across the Asian region. It aspires to lead in innovative teaching, impactful research, and effective knowledge dissemination in the field of management studies.
To fulfill this vision, the department offers a diverse array of academic programs that span from undergraduate to doctoral levels. It also organizes conferences, seminars, short courses, and special programs to support continuing professional development and industry-academia engagement.
The department’s academic offerings are designed to respond to the demands of the modern business world and reflect a paradigm shift in teaching and learning methods. These programs emphasize job-oriented, practical business education that equips graduates to excel in a competitive, globalized economy.
With nearly 50,000 graduates to date, the Department has made a significant impact on the country’s corporate landscape. Its alumni are actively contributing across all major sectors of Bangladesh’s economy. Many have risen to top executive positions, while others have founded and led major organizations—proof of the department’s transformative influence.
Currently, around 2,500 students, managers, and executives are pursuing studies at the department. In addition, over 30 researchers are enrolled in M.Phil., Ph.D., and DBA programs, conducting advanced research under the supervision of esteemed faculty members.
The department boasts a robust academic team, comprising 31 faculty members, many of whom hold Ph.D. or MBA degrees from top institutions at home and abroad. The faculty combines strong teaching credentials with a rich research background, frequently presenting at international conferences and seminars.
