The roots of accounting education at the University of Dhaka go back to 1921, the year of the university’s establishment. Accounting was first taught as a subject under the Department of Commerce in the 1922–23 academic session, within the Faculty of Arts. The M.Com. program was introduced in 1948–49, producing its first graduates by 1950.
The mission of the academic programs offered by the Department of Accounting & Information Systems is to develop in its students the required knowledge and understanding about theoretical concepts and practical techniques for Accounting profession and Managerial discipline, in order that they are able to cater to the growing demands of the job market and successfully participate in the competitive environment of the modem world of business.

The department fosters a strong research culture through its M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs, encouraging advanced studies in accounting, taxation, information systems, and financial governance. Faculty members are actively involved in research, regularly presenting papers at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals, helping shape policy and practice in the field of accounting.
